What happens if your ABN is cancelled?
Your GST registration ends with it, customers paying an invoice without a valid ABN must withhold tax at the top rate, and anyone who looks you up sees a business that appears to have stopped. It is usually cancelled because no activity statements or business income were reported, and it can be reinstated through the Australian Business Register.
Why it happened
The Registrar cancels ABNs that appear inactive. The inference is drawn from absence rather than from any decision about you: no business activity statements lodged, no business income in a tax return, nothing suggesting the business is still trading. If you have been operating but behind on paperwork, you look identical to a business that closed.
Most owners find out by accident — a customer's accounts department queries the invoice, a supplier's onboarding fails, or a broker runs a check. That is the worst way to find out, because by then somebody else has already drawn a conclusion.
What changes immediately
| What | Consequence |
|---|---|
| GST registration | Ends with the ABN. You can no longer claim GST credits on purchases, and your invoices should not charge GST. |
| Customer payments | A business paying an invoice that does not quote a valid ABN is required to withhold tax at the top rate. Your invoices get paid short, and reclaiming the difference is slow. |
| How you look | ABN Lookup is public and is checked constantly — by customers, suppliers, insurers, landlords and tenders. A cancelled ABN reads as a business that has stopped trading. |
| Contracts and prequalification | Many require a current ABN as a condition. A cancellation can breach one without anybody intending it. |
Fixing it
- 1Apply to reinstate through the Australian Business Register. If the business is genuinely trading and the cancellation is recent, reactivating the same number is often possible — and keeping the same number avoids updating every customer, supplier and system you deal with.
- 2Bring the lodgements up to date. They are the reason it happened. Lodging also supports the reinstatement and stops failure-to-lodge penalties accruing further. If the backlog is significant.
- 3Check whether GST registration needs to be reinstated separately.Do not assume it comes back automatically with the ABN. Confirm it, because invoicing GST without being registered creates its own problem.
- 4Tell your customers before they tell you.A short message that it is a lodgement administration matter being corrected is far better received than a discovery at their end.
- 5Deal with what sits behind it.If lodgements stopped, there is usually a tax balance growing in the background. That is the real issue, and it does not improve with time.
The honest part
A cancelled ABN is rarely a filing oversight in an otherwise healthy business. Lodgements stop when an owner is overwhelmed, when the accountant has not been paid, or when nobody wants to see the number the BAS will produce. Every one of those is understandable and none of them improves by being left.
If that is the position, the registration is the smallest part of it. What is worth dealing with is the balance that has been accruing while the statements were not lodged, and the page on an unpaid BAS and the one on clearing an ATO debt pick that up. The order that works is: lodge, find out the real number, then decide how to deal with it.
An ABN is rarely cancelled in isolation. It is cancelled because lodgements stopped, and lodgements usually stop because the business was under pressure — which is the thing actually worth addressing.
