20 years ago today, I started HomeSec Business Finance funding exactly what we still do today, which is fast Short Term Business Loans. As a person at the time with no finance or banking experience, no industry contacts, and very little knowledge of lending, it was undoubtedly the bravest period of my life.
Lending your own money to people you don’t know, in an industry you know very little about, and not knowing who the bad guys are from the good guys, took nerves of steel and was very stressful in those early days.
However, one thing that got me through was taking an honest, transparent, and commercial approach to everything my company did. If you do the right thing, the rest takes care of itself.
In those early days, I became acquainted with many of my private lender competitors, and to be honest, most taught me how NOT to do things. Coming from a business background in retail and transport, I was shocked at how poorly clients and borrowers were treated. So, another guiding principle was to always treat my clients and brokers with empathy and respect.
Incidentally, almost all of those scores of competitors ceased operating years ago. Is it any wonder?
On a positive note, there are hundreds of people I would love to thank for their genuine help and guidance over the past 20 years. It would take all week to run through the names of these awesome people individually however those people know who they are. 👍
I’d also like to thank the hundreds upon hundreds of awesome brokers and referral partners who have put their faith in HomeSec over the years. Some of the originals are still sending short term 1st and 2nd mortgage deals through to this very day.
Also, a big shout out to the amazing HomeSec Business Finance team, past and present. We enjoy a very low staff turnover at HomeSec, so team members become like family. Thank you guys and girls!
Finally, a special thank you to our HomeSec Group General Manager Catriona Anderson (a HomeSec team member for 19 years), and my fellow Director Jason Brockmuller, who ironically was the very first person I met when I first started the company on June 22, 2004.
Today we celebrate 20 Years of Funding Small Businesses, and while I am very proud of the company’s achievements over the past 20 years, and today is a day of celebration and gratitude, I am a big believer that we are only as good as our next client or broker interaction. So bring on today, tomorrow, and the next 20 years!
